Basic Painting Guide: Simple Wood

Image
As I was starting this Frostgrave Barbarian anyway, I thought I'd do a simple tutorial on painting wood. Probably better described as small-area wood , as the effect may not look quite and good on larger areas(?) The Paints ... Beasty Brown - Vallejo Game Color Yellow Ochre - Vallejo Model Color Bone White - Vallejo Game Color Dark Tone (wash) - Army Painter The undercoated figure ... Step One Base colour of Beasty Brown. Step Two Wash of Dark Tone. Step Three Returning to Beasty Brown, paint strokes, inline with the woodgrain texture. Step Four Adding a dash of Yellow Ochre to the Beasty Brown, paint quick strokes as previously, but not trailing as far. Don't have the paint too thick, but keep the mixture fairly loose. You can do this a couple of time, to build-up colour. Let the previous coat dry first though; water will make the layer look brighter initially. Step Five Add a dash of Bone White to the Beasty Brown/Yellow Ochre...

Currently on the desk ...

As a first real  post; well a post with some content, we'll start with what figures are currently sitting on the paint desk. I'm at the tail-end of a commission at the moment, a commission that has stuttered somewhat due to a dose of Life getting in the way. So I'm playing catch-up. Finished are a selection of Saxons, Viking women, some Conan figures and a Roman Ballista - quite the selection! And on the nearly-done/still-to-come side, are some more Romans, a couple of Saxon commanders and (not shown) two Dead Man's Hand gangs. A pretty eclectic mix, I think you'll agree. Still, enjoyable to paint none-the less. No promises, but I'll try my best to update this blog on a regular basis, with info on the other sort of stuff I do too, such as foam props, painting and photography. P.S. The figures are from a mixture of manufacturers, most being either Stronghold Terrain or Footsore Miniatures.
