Malifaux Sun Quiang and Fish Painting ...
A quick and somewhat pithy post here, just to document some work-in-progress on a Malifaux Sun Quiang figure from Wyrd Miniatures.
I've had this model sitting around for a while, racking my brains with what to paint on it. I'd always wanted to make it a bit special and brush-up (seriously, no pun intended!) on freehand painting, so decided to keep it fairly traditional and aim at something along the Chinese/Japanese look - nothing too specific, but along those lines.
I started with the idea of a simple pattern on the under-robe and a dragon on the back of the top-robe. This then evolved to various Chinese demons and various forms of Kabuki masks. Then I thought of Koi and a watery theme for the lower-robe and moving up to a landscape scene for the top-robe.
This seemed like an okay idea, but the more I thought on it, the more I felt the painting on the back should be a little bolder ... and so I went for just Koi.
Now, my first attempt was similar - both in look and position - to how you see it in the photos below, but just looked (to me) too messy; just didn't like it. So, painted over and started again.
Using Google images, I settled on a slight variation on two pictures: one was a loose watercolour of a Koi and the other much more traditional, with bright colours.
As you can see, the painting to the back is a bold rendition, but the koi to the lower robe will be a little more subtle.
I still have plenty more to do, but I'm much happier with this second try. It was certainly a pain and - shocking as this may seem - some swearing was had!
There still needs to be some touches added to the back Koi, but he's pretty much done. Now to make a start on the second ... then finish off the face, hair, robes, hat ... !
